Driving a NZ motorhome in May
May is the start of winter pricing on most NZ motorhome fleets. Settled cool weather in the east, alpine passes seeing first snow, days under 11 hours, deals available.
May is the transition month between autumn and winter. Daytime temperatures across the South Island sit at 10-15°C, the North Island at 13-19°C, and daylight drops to 10 hours by month's end. Alpine passes — Crown Range, Lewis, Arthur's, Lindis — start seeing snowfall and overnight ice from mid-May, though they remain open and driveable. Motorhome rental rates step down to their winter low: roughly 35-45% below January peak. For travellers who don't need beach weather, May offers Aoraki and Fiordland with the autumn-into-winter scenery and almost no other vehicles on the road.
What's open and what's closing
Holiday parks all open year-round in main locations. DOC sites: most stay open, a handful close for winter. Milford Road (SH94) stays open year-round with chains-required signage when needed. Fiordland day cruises run all year. Skifields don't open until June — May is genuinely the only month you can have empty Wanaka and Queenstown without snow crowds.
What to expect for weather
South Island east coast: dry, cold mornings, clear days. Mackenzie Basin: classic stargazing weather, overnight 0 to -3°C. West Coast: wet but breaks are common. North Island above Lake Taupō: 14-20°C, autumn colour mostly past peak by mid-May.
Vehicle considerations
The on-board diesel heater (most modern motorhomes have one) becomes essential, not optional. Confirm at pickup that you've been shown how to run it. Verify chains are in the vehicle if your route crosses the Crown Range, Lindis Pass, or Milford Road in mid-to-late May — though chains are rarely needed before June.
