On a clear West Coast morning, Franz Josef can feel half-awake: kettle steam in the van, damp bush scent in the air, and SH6 already murmuring south through the trees. The Franz Josef to Fox Glacier drive is short: about 23 km on SH6, usually 25 to 30 minutes of pure driving. With glacier viewpoints, photos, parking, and a coffee stop, allow 2 to 3 hours.

This is a useful little West Coast leg inside the South Island in 14 days and South Island in 10 days route guides. March is one of the easier months for daylight and weather, but heavy rain can still change the day fast.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

Franz Josef village to Fox Glacier township is about 23 km via SH6. The road is sealed the whole way. It is two-lane, narrow in places, and it runs through dense West Coast bush with a few short rises and bends.

  • Pure driving time: 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Realistic time with stops: 2 to 3 hours if you walk to one or two viewpoints.
  • Road: SH6 southbound, no turn-off needed between the two townships.
  • Pass altitude: none. This leg does not cross Haast Pass or an alpine pass.
  • Motorhome size: a 2-berth or 4-berth is easy here. A 6-berth is fine if the driver is calm on narrow roads and uses pull-outs for faster traffic.

New Zealand drives on the left. After photo stops, that is when visitors are most likely to drift toward the wrong side, so reset yourself before pulling back onto SH6. Our First time driving a motorhome guide is worth reading before this part of the West Coast.

Three stops worth making, in order

Do not treat this as only a transfer. The point of the leg is seeing two glacier valleys back-to-back, while still keeping the day easy.

This is the kind of short drive where the best timing is measured by steam on your coffee and cloud lifting off the valley walls.

  1. Franz Josef Glacier access area: From the south end of Franz Josef village, follow the marked glacier access road to the car park. The valley walk gives the better feel for scale than a quick roadside photo. Check DOC signs on the day, as river conditions can close tracks after heavy rain.
  2. Lake Mapourika lookout or Okarito turn-off: If light is good, the Okarito side road adds a coastal wetland feel, but it is a bigger detour. For a short day, just pause near Lake Mapourika and keep moving.
  3. Fox Glacier viewpoint area: On arrival, use the signed glacier viewpoint options rather than trying to force the motorhome down minor roads. Track access changes, so follow current DOC notices in Fox Glacier township.

If you want a proper overnight, Fox Glacier Top 10 Holiday Park is the simple powered-site choice in town. Gillespies Beach Campsite is a DOC option beyond Fox Glacier, but the access road is longer, narrower, and not the right pick for a late arrival in rain.

A quiet moment on the Franz Josef to Fox Glacier — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

The two recommended pace options

Same-day slow: Start in Franz Josef after breakfast, do the glacier valley area, drive SH6 to Fox Glacier, then walk one Fox viewpoint in the afternoon. This is the normal plan if your wider route continues south toward Haast and Wanaka the next day.

One night in the middle of the glacier country: Stay in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier if the cloud is low, if rain is forecast to ease tomorrow, or if you have children who need shorter walking blocks. The West Coast rewards patience more than speed.

The compromise is that staying over gives better weather odds, but it also means trimming time from Haast, Wanaka, or the lakes later.

This leg sits naturally on a West Coast region itinerary. It also links with the longer Franz Josef to Queenstown drive, where the next serious road section is SH6 over Haast Pass at 564 m, then the lakeside run toward Wanaka. That is a full-day motorhome drive, not an afternoon add-on after two glacier walks.

Fuel and food along the way

Fuel in Franz Josef before you leave if your tank is below half. Fox Glacier also has fuel, but small-town West Coast supply is not the same as Christchurch, Queenstown, or Nelson. Pumps can be self-service, card-only, or busy when tour traffic arrives.

There is no real fuel strategy between the villages because the drive is so short. The better strategy is thinking ahead: if you are going south after Fox, fill before the longer SH6 run toward Haast, Makarora, and Wanaka. That next stretch has far fewer services.

For food, Franz Josef has more choice for a stock-up lunch. Fox Glacier works well for coffee, a simple meal, and parking before a walk. If you are cooking in the van, buy basics earlier in Hokitika, Greymouth, or Wanaka rather than relying on small glacier-town shelves.

When not to rush this short drive

This is not an alpine crossing, but winter and rain still matter. In June, July, and August, expect short daylight, wet road edges, shaded corners, and occasional black ice early in the morning. Snow chains are not normally the issue on Franz Josef to Fox Glacier itself, but they may matter later if your route crosses alpine roads in Canterbury, Otago, or Fiordland.

Heavy West Coast rain is the bigger concern. SH6 can be affected by slips, flooding, treefall, and road works after storms. Check NZTA road status before leaving Franz Josef, and do not drive into a valley access road if DOC has closed it.

If you arrived via the Cook Strait ferry into Picton, do not plan Picton to Franz Josef to Fox Glacier in one hit. The Interislander or Bluebridge crossing takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, closer to 3.5 hours with loading, and the West Coast is still a long drive away.

Franz Josef to Fox Glacier — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Franz Josef to Fox Glacier drive?
Yes. SH6 between Franz Josef and Fox Glacier is sealed and suitable for a 6-berth motorhome. The issue is not road surface; it is driver comfort. The lane feels narrower than many visitors expect, and the bush comes close to the road in places. Keep left, slow down before bends, and use pull-outs if local traffic builds behind you. Do not take a large vehicle down unsigned side tracks just for a photo.
Should we stay one night at Franz Josef or push through to Fox Glacier?
Stay one night if the weather window is poor, if you want both glacier areas without rushing, or if you are continuing south to Haast and Wanaka the next day. Push through to Fox Glacier if you have already walked Franz Josef in the morning and only want one Fox viewpoint before dinner. For most first-time motorhome travellers, one relaxed night in glacier country beats turning this into a checklist.
Is fuel cheaper in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier?
Do not plan this leg around a small fuel-price difference. Both are remote West Coast townships, and prices can sit above what you saw in larger centres. The practical rule is simpler: fill in Franz Josef if you are below half, especially if you are heading south from Fox toward Haast. If you are northbound, top up before leaving Fox if your next stop is Hokitika or Greymouth.
