The drive Franz Josef to Queenstown is one of the big South Island transition days. You leave glacier country on the West Coast, cross Haast Pass at 564 m, then run past Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea, Cromwell and the Kawarau Gorge into the Queenstown region.

It is about 350 km on SH6. Count on 5 hours 15 minutes of pure driving in a motorhome, and 7 to 8 hours once you add fuel, toilets, photos and a proper lunch stop.

At a glance: SH6 distance, time and fuel

Stay on SH6 all the way from Franz Josef to Queenstown. The sealed road is fine for motorhomes, but it is not a motorway. Expect one-lane bridges on the West Coast, tight bends through Haast Pass, gravelly pull-outs, lake-edge corners near Hawea, then busier traffic from Cromwell through the Kawarau Gorge.

  • Distance: about 350 km.
  • Pure driving time: about 5 hours 15 minutes in a motorhome.
  • Realistic time with stops: 7 to 8 hours.
  • Main road: SH6 from Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Haast, Makarora, Wanaka, Cromwell and into Queenstown.
  • Alpine point: Haast Pass, 564 m.

Top up before you leave Franz Josef or Fox Glacier if your tank is below half. There is fuel at Haast, including Allied, then more reliable choice in Wanaka with BP and other town stations. Queenstown fuel is mostly around Frankton, including Z Energy. Do not run the West Coast section on fumes.

Same day or one night in between

A same-day run works if you leave Franz Josef by 8.30 am, skip long walks, and are comfortable arriving in Queenstown late afternoon. It suits a 2-berth or 4-berth motorhome better than a large 6-berth, mainly because the driver has less work on narrow bends and bridge approaches.

Overnight in the middle if you are coming off a glacier heli-hike, travelling with children, or driving on the left for the first time. Lake Paringa DOC Campsite and Cameron Flat Campsite near Makarora both break the journey well. Wanaka is the easier powered-site option if you want laundry, groceries and a shorter final day into Queenstown.

This leg sits neatly inside South Island in 14 days and Auckland to Queenstown one-way. March is the cleanest month for many first-timers: long daylight, less holiday traffic than January, and usually easier weather on Haast Pass. Pair this drive with the First time driving a motorhome guide before you commit to a long first day.

A quiet moment on the Franz Josef to Queenstown — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making, in order

Lake Matheson, near Fox Glacier: allow 45 to 90 minutes. On a clear morning the reflection view back to Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman is worth the short diversion. Use the main car park and take it slowly in a larger vehicle.

Ship Creek / Tauparikākā: allow 20 to 30 minutes. This is a good driver reset after the forest and coast sections. The pull-in is sealed, but the edges can be loose gravel, so avoid swinging wide.

Thunder Creek Falls: allow 15 minutes. It is a short walk just east of Haast Pass. This is the easiest waterfall stop on the route and a better choice than trying to cram in every signed lookout. After Makarora, the Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea viewpoints are tempting, but choose one safe pull-off rather than stopping every five minutes.

When not to make the long run south

Do not treat this as a casual afternoon drive in winter. Haast Pass is lower than Lindis Pass or Crown Range, but snow, black ice, slips and fallen branches still close SH6 from time to time. Check NZTA road conditions before leaving Franz Josef from June to August, and again before Haast if the weather is moving fast.

Rental operators may require snow chains in winter, even if you never fit them. If chains are required on the day and you have not practised, wait it out. A large motorhome on icy bends is hard work.

The Cook Strait ferry is not part of this leg. If you have crossed from Wellington to Picton the day before, do not plan Picton, the West Coast and Queenstown as one compressed push. Use the Cook Strait ferry with a campervan guide for that timing, then give the West Coast its own days.

Haast Pass route — 4.5 hr via SH6, gravel-y rest stops, glacier-to-lake transition.

Arriving in Queenstown without extra stress

Queenstown is not the place to arrive tired and start hunting for legal overnight parking. Freedom camping rules are tight around town, and many lakeside areas are prohibited or heavily controlled. If you want a practical first night, look at Creeksyde Queenstown Holiday Park, Queenstown Top 10 at Arthurs Point, or a pre-planned site out toward Frankton.

If you are heading onward, the Queenstown + Fiordland loop usually continues to Te Anau and Milford Sound on SH94. The Christchurch to Queenstown route often uses this leg in reverse after Wanaka and the West Coast. For vehicle choice, a 2-berth or compact 4-berth is easiest here. A 6-berth can do it, but parking in Queenstown and squeezing into busy viewpoints takes patience.

Franz Josef to Queenstown — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth do the Crown Range?
Yes, many 6-berth motorhomes physically can do the Crown Range Road, which reaches 1,121 m, but it is not the route I would choose after driving from Franz Josef. Stay on SH6 through Wanaka, Cromwell and the Kawarau Gorge unless weather, road works or your overnight plan says otherwise. The Crown Range is steeper, tighter and more exposed. In winter it can need chains or close after snow.
Should we overnight at Tekapo or push through?
Lake Tekapo is not on the Franz Josef to Queenstown route. It sits well east in the Mackenzie Country, usually on a Queenstown to Mount Cook or Christchurch leg. For this drive, the sensible break points are Haast, Makarora or Wanaka. If your bigger itinerary goes from the West Coast to Tekapo, you are building a different cross-island day and should not treat Queenstown as a quick add-on.
Is the fuel cheaper in Wanaka or Queenstown?
It changes, so do not build the day around saving a few cents per litre. Remote West Coast fuel is often dearer than larger inland towns, which is why I top up enough at Franz Josef or Fox, then reassess at Haast or Wanaka. Queenstown fuel is usually easiest around Frankton, including Z Energy. Cromwell can be a useful final top-up before the Kawarau Gorge if your tank is low.
