A Greymouth to Christchurch drive is the classic West Coast exit over SH73 and Arthur's Pass. In a motorhome, allow 241 km, about 3 hours 30 minutes of pure driving, or 5 to 6 hours with three proper stops.

This leg sits neatly inside South Island in 10 days and South Island in 14 days, then finishes in the Christchurch region. November is a good shoulder-season month for this crossing, and first-timers should read First time driving a motorhome before taking on an alpine highway on the left.

SH73 at a glance: distance, time and altitude

The route is simple on paper. Leave Greymouth on SH6 briefly, then follow SH73 east through Kumara, Otira, Arthur's Pass, Springfield and into Christchurch. The road is sealed the whole way.

The alpine work is real. Arthur's Pass is 920 m, and SH73 also climbs Porters Pass near 939 m before dropping onto the Canterbury Plains. A compact 2-berth or 4-berth feels easy enough. A 6-berth can do it, but you will use the slow-vehicle bays and you need patience on the steeper west side near Otira.

Fuel and food before the mountains

Fill in Greymouth. Z Energy and Mobil are both practical before you leave town, and this is not a leg where you want to be hunting for fuel in the hills. Do not rely on Arthur's Pass village for a normal motorhome top-up.

For coffee or lunch, Kumara is an early stop, Arthur's Pass village works in the middle, and Springfield has fuel and cafes after the main alpine section. If you are returning a vehicle in Christchurch, North South Holiday Park near the airport is a useful final-night base.

A quiet moment on the Greymouth to Christchurch — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making, west to east

  1. Otira Viaduct Lookout: about 88 km from Greymouth. Use the marked parking area, keep food inside, and give kea plenty of space. This is a quick 10 to 15 minute stop.
  2. Arthur's Pass village: good for toilets, a short walk and weather sense-check. Devils Punchbowl Walking Track is around 1 hour return, but skip it if rain is heavy or daylight is tight.
  3. Kura Tawhiti / Castle Hill: about 95 km before Christchurch. The limestone walk is easy to sample in 25 to 45 minutes, and the car park suits motorhomes better than many roadside pull-offs.

Same-day run or one night in the middle

Same day is fine if you leave Greymouth by 9 am, have dry weather, and do not need a big supermarket stop until Christchurch. You will arrive mid-afternoon with sensible breaks.

Overnight if you are starting from further south on the West Coast, travelling with children, or driving your first large vehicle in New Zealand. Jackson's Retreat Alpine Holiday Park sits west of Arthur's Pass, while DOC's Klondyke Corner Campsite is a basic alpine option near the village. Check facilities and weather before choosing either.

Arthur's Pass SH73 east, 3.5 hr, alpine drive.

When not to drive it in one run

In winter, SH73 can have snow, ice, chain controls and short-notice closures, especially around Arthur's Pass, Otira Gorge and Porters Pass. Check Waka Kotahi road updates before leaving Greymouth. If chains are required, follow your rental operator's instructions rather than improvising on the roadside.

Do not make this a late-day drive after a Cook Strait ferry day or after the long Greymouth to Franz Josef leg in reverse. New Zealand drives on the left, daylight disappears fast in the valleys, and the last hour into Christchurch is still real city driving.

Greymouth to Christchurch — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do Greymouth to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass?
Yes, a 6-berth can drive SH73 over Arthur's Pass, but it is not the vehicle size I would choose for a nervous first day. The west side near Otira is steep and winding, and you will need to let faster traffic pass. Take the slow-vehicle bays, avoid sudden braking on descents, and leave Greymouth early so you are not rushing.
Should we overnight at Arthur's Pass or push through to Christchurch?
Push through if you start in Greymouth, the weather is settled, and Christchurch is only your overnight stop. Overnight near Arthur's Pass if you want Devils Punchbowl, Castle Hill and slower photo stops without clock-watching. It also makes sense in winter, when ice and chain rules can turn a tidy 3.5 hour drive into a much longer day.
Is fuel cheaper in Greymouth or Christchurch?
Christchurch often has more competition and may be cheaper, but do not base the day on saving a few cents per litre. Fill in Greymouth before SH73 because fuel options are limited through the alpine section. If you arrive with plenty in the tank, you can choose a city fuel stop later rather than taking whatever is open.
