The Kaikoura to Picton drive is a short but important SH1 leg: about 156 km, usually 2 hours 10 minutes of pure driving, or 3 to 4 hours once you stop for seals, coffee, fuel and ferry timing.

It sits inside the Kaikoura + Marlborough Sounds route, South Island in 14 days, and longer North to South in 21 days plans. The destination is the Picton region, with February the easiest summer month for long daylight and calmer ferry buffers.

The drive at a glance: SH1 north to Picton

From Kaikoura, stay on State Highway 1 all the way north through Kekerengu, Ward, Seddon and Blenheim, then continue over the low hills into Picton. There is no alpine pass on this leg. The road is fully sealed, mostly two-lane, and easy by South Island standards, but it is not a motorway.

  • Distance: about 156 km.
  • Pure driving time: around 2 hours 10 minutes in a car or small camper.
  • Realistic motorhome time: 3 to 4 hours with two stops and a fuel top-up.
  • Roads: SH1 from Kaikoura to Picton via Blenheim.
  • Recommended motorhome size: 2-berth or 4-berth is easiest. A 6-berth is fine, but slower through roadworks, tight pull-outs and Picton ferry lanes.

The rebuilt coastal section north of Kaikoura has sea walls, rail crossings, short tunnels and occasional maintenance work. In winter, snow chains are not normally relevant here, but heavy rain can bring slips or rockfall warnings along the coast. Check NZTA before leaving if the forecast is rough.

Three stops worth making, in order

1. Ohau Point seal viewing area. This is roughly 25 km north of Kaikoura. It is the cleanest short stop on the coast, with proper parking and a good chance of seeing seals on the rocks below. Keep well back from any seal near the car park. They are quicker than they look.

2. The Store at Kekerengu. About 60 km north of Kaikoura, this is the natural coffee and toilet pause. The parking is better than most tiny coastal pull-offs, and it breaks the drive at the right time for anyone still settling into left-side driving.

3. Lake Grassmere saltworks viewpoint. North of Ward, the road runs past the pink and white salt ponds at Lake Grassmere. It is a quick look rather than a long walk, but it gives the leg a different feel before you reach vineyard country around Blenheim.

If you have more time, Blenheim is the practical stop, not the pretty one. Use it for groceries, fuel and a supermarket reset before the final 28 km to Picton.

A quiet moment on the Kaikoura to Picton — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Same day, overnight, or ferry day

For most travellers, Kaikoura to Picton is an easy same-day drive. Leave after breakfast, stop at Ohau Point and Kekerengu, fuel in Blenheim, and reach Picton early afternoon. That works well if you are sleeping in Picton before the ferry or starting a Marlborough Sounds side trip.

If you are catching the Cook Strait ferry the same day, be more conservative. The Interislander and Bluebridge Picton to Wellington crossing is about 3 hours 20 minutes, and closer to 3.5 hours once loading and unloading are counted. Motorhomes should be at the terminal at least 60 minutes before sailing. I prefer 90 minutes, especially in December, January and February.

Do not plan a late Kaikoura departure with an evening ferry unless you are comfortable with no real stops. In peak season, book the Picton ferry about 4 months out, not 2 weeks, particularly for a 6 m plus motorhome.

Fuel, food and first-time driving notes

Fuel is available in Kaikoura, Blenheim and Picton. The easiest plan is to leave Kaikoura with at least half a tank, then top up in Blenheim where you will find major stations such as Z Energy, BP, Mobil and Caltex. Do not arrive in Picton nearly empty if you have an early ferry next morning.

Food is simple on this leg. Kaikoura has cafés and bakeries. Kekerengu is the best mid-drive stop. Blenheim has larger supermarkets, which is useful before staying in Picton or heading towards Nelson.

New Zealand drives on the left. If this is your first hire day, read the First time driving a motorhome guide and the Driving on the left in NZ notes before this leg. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months. If your licence is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit or approved translation. Minimum hire age varies, commonly 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class.

What to do once you get to Picton

Picton is small, but it is a good place to pause. If you are not boarding the ferry straight away, walk the waterfront, check the ferry terminal layout, and sort water, waste and groceries before the next move. Tasman Holiday Parks Picton and Picton Campervan Park are practical town bases.

This leg pairs naturally with the Picton region page, the Cook Strait ferry with a campervan practical guide, and the Picton to Christchurch drive if you are turning south again. For a wider plan, use it inside South Island in 10 days, South Island in 14 days, or North to South in 21 days, then check the vehicle-size guide before choosing a larger motorhome for ferry days.

Kaikoura to Picton — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Kaikoura to Picton drive?
Yes. SH1 between Kaikoura and Picton is sealed and suitable for a 6-berth motorhome. The trade-off is comfort at the smaller pull-outs and slower progress through coastal roadworks or windy sections. Use the larger parking areas at Ohau Point and Kekerengu rather than squeezing into narrow gravel shoulders. If you are catching the ferry, check your vehicle length on the ticket and arrive early for lane loading.
Should we overnight in Blenheim or push through to Picton?
Push through to Picton if your ferry is the next morning, or if you want the Marlborough Sounds feel at the end of the day. Overnight in Blenheim if you want wineries, supermarket choice, laundry, or a less rushed reset after Kaikoura. The Blenheim to Picton section is only about 28 km, usually 25 to 35 minutes, so staying in Blenheim still leaves an easy run to the ferry.
Is fuel cheaper in Kaikoura, Blenheim or Picton?
Fuel pricing moves around, so do not build the day around a few cents per litre. In practice, Blenheim usually gives you the most choice because it has several major stations and supermarkets close together. Kaikoura and Picton are more constrained by location and ferry traffic. The sensible motorhome plan is simple: leave Kaikoura with enough range, top up in Blenheim, and avoid a stressful near-empty arrival in Picton.
