The Napier to Wellington drive is a straight SH2 run through Hawke's Bay, the Tararua District, Wairarapa, then over the Remutaka Hill into the capital. Plan on about 320 km, 4 hr 30 min pure driving, or 5 hr 45 min to 6 hr 30 min in a motorhome with fuel, food, and one proper stop.
This leg fits neatly inside a North Island in 10 days plan, or a North to South in 14 days route if Wellington is your ferry point. March is a good month for this drive, with lighter traffic than January and still-useful daylight.

SH2 at a glance: distance, time, road and fuel
From central Napier to central Wellington, use SH2 almost all the way: Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau, Dannevirke, Woodville, Masterton, Featherston, then the Remutaka Hill Road into Lower Hutt and Wellington.
- Distance: about 320 km.
- Pure driving: 4 hr 20 min to 4 hr 45 min in normal conditions.
- Realistic motorhome day: 5 hr 45 min to 6 hr 30 min with stops.
- Road surface: sealed highway throughout, mostly two-lane rural road.
- Main climb: Remutaka Hill Road, summit about 555 m.
Fuel is easy in Napier and Hastings. After that, useful stops include BP Waipukurau, Z Dannevirke, and Masterton fuel stations before the Remutaka climb. Do not arrive in Wellington low on diesel at 5 pm. City traffic makes simple jobs slow.
Same-day run or a night in Wairarapa
A same-day drive is fine if you leave Napier by 9 am and are staying in Wellington that night. A 2-berth or 4-berth motorhome suits this road best. A 6-berth can do it, but the Remutaka bends and Wellington parking make it less relaxing.
Break the trip if you want a slower food-and-wine day, or if you are new to driving on the left in NZ. Greytown, Carterton, and Masterton all work as Wairarapa overnight bases. That also turns the Remutaka Hill into a fresh-morning drive instead of a late-afternoon chore.
If this is your first motorhome day, read the First time driving a motorhome guide before you leave Napier. The basics are simple: keep left, take wider turns, and let faster traffic pass when there is a safe pull-over.
The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.
Three stops worth making, in order
1. Te Mata Peak, Havelock North. This is the best Hawke's Bay viewpoint, but the final road is steep and narrow. Smaller campers can go up carefully. In a long 6-berth, use a lower car park or skip it if you are not confident.
2. Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, near Mount Bruce. It sits just north of Masterton on SH2 and is the best proper break on the drive. Allow 60 to 90 minutes if you want more than coffee and a toilet stop.
3. Remutaka Hill summit lookout. Pull in only if there is space and the wind is not silly. The view back over Wairarapa is good, and it gives the brakes a short rest before the descent toward Upper Hutt.
When not to push through to Wellington
Do not push this drive in one hit after a long lunch in Hawke's Bay wineries. SH2 is not difficult, but it needs attention. There are towns, trucks, farm traffic, and a winding final section over the Remutaka Hill.
In winter, the Remutaka Hill can get ice, low cloud, strong wind, and occasional snow. Full closures are not daily events, but they happen often enough that locals check Waka Kotahi road updates before travelling in bad weather. Chains are not normally part of a North Island camper plan, but your rental agreement and road-condition advice still matter.
Also avoid lining this up with a tight Cook Strait ferry connection. The Interislander and Bluebridge crossing between Wellington and Picton takes about 3 hr 20 min on the water, closer to 3.5 hr with loading. In peak season, book the ferry months ahead and allow at least a one-hour vehicle check-in buffer.
4.5-hr SH2 south, Hawke's Bay wine country.
Arriving in the Wellington region
The Wellington region is compact, hilly, and busy compared with Hawke's Bay. If you do not need the vehicle in the city centre, consider staying at Wellington Top 10 Holiday Park in Lower Hutt and using public transport or a taxi into town.
For the ferry terminal, follow SH2 along the harbour, then city signs for the operator named on your sailing. Do not rely on finding easy kerbside parking near the waterfront in a large motorhome. If Wellington is your turnaround point, plan your dump station, supermarket run, and fuel before the final morning.
