The Nelson to Greymouth drive follows SH6 for about 286 km. Allow 4.5 hours of pure driving in a motorhome, or 6-7 hours once you add fuel, lunch, the Buller Gorge, and Punakaiki.

This leg is the cleanest way into the West Coast region from Nelson. It often sits inside South Island in 14 days or North to South in 21 days. February is the busiest month for parking at Punakaiki, while March and April feel calmer.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

Nelson to Greymouth is SH6 all the way: Nelson, Murchison, Buller Gorge, Westport, Punakaiki, then Greymouth. The road is sealed for the full distance, but it is not a motorway. Expect bends, narrow shoulders, short passing lanes, and slower traffic through the gorge and coastal sections.

The high point is Hope Saddle, about 634 m. It is not an alpine pass like Arthur's Pass, but it can be frosty in winter and shaded after rain. A compact 2-berth or shorter 4-berth is easier here than a long 6-berth, especially on the winding coast south of Westport. Use the vehicle-size guide if you are still choosing your van.

Fuel is simple if you plan it. Fill in Nelson before leaving, top up in Murchison if needed, and do not rely on Punakaiki for fuel. Westport has service stations, and Greymouth has Z Energy and other main-town options.

The two recommended pace options

Same-day drive: leave Nelson by 8.30 am. Stop at Murchison, take one gorge stop, have a proper break near Westport, then reach Punakaiki mid-afternoon. This keeps the final Punakaiki to Greymouth stretch in daylight.

Easy overnight: break the drive at Westport or Punakaiki. Westport Kiwi Holiday Park works well if you want shops, fuel, and an easier morning. Punakaiki Beach Camp suits travellers who want to walk the Pancake Rocks in softer light without rushing the parking.

If you are coming from the Cook Strait ferry, be careful. Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes Wellington to Picton, or around 3.5 hours with loading. Picton to Nelson is another 2 hours. Do not add Nelson to Greymouth after an afternoon ferry arrival.

A quiet moment on the Nelson to Greymouth — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making

  1. Murchison: about 125 km from Nelson, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in a motorhome. Use it for coffee, toilets, and a driver reset before the Buller Gorge bends.
  2. Buller Gorge: the river section west of Murchison is the best part of the inland drive. The Buller Gorge Swingbridge is a paid stop and needs about 45-60 minutes. If you do not stop there, still slow down through the gorge and use signed pull-offs only.
  3. Punakaiki Pancake Rocks: this is the stop to protect. It is about 45 km north of Greymouth and the loop walk takes 20-30 minutes. In February, arrive earlier or later in the day if you want easier motorhome parking.

When not to do this drive in one day

Do not make this a long first driving day if you are new to New Zealand roads. NZ drives on the left, rural SH6 has one-lane bridges and tight bends, and a motorhome takes longer to settle into than a car. The First time driving a motorhome guide is worth reading before this leg.

Winter is usually manageable, but frost on Hope Saddle and shaded sections near the Buller Gorge can slow the day. Heavy West Coast rain can bring surface flooding, fallen branches, and occasional slip delays between Punakaiki and Greymouth. Check NZTA/Waka Kotahi road conditions before leaving Nelson.

6-hr SH6 down West Coast, Punakaiki stop.

What to do once you get to Greymouth

Greymouth is practical rather than pretty, which is useful after a long SH6 day. Greymouth Seaside Top 10 gives you power, laundry, showers, and a reset before heading farther south. Hokitika is 40 km away, usually 35-45 minutes, if your wider plan continues down the West Coast.

If this drive is part of South Island in 10 days, you may be tempted to keep moving. I would not add a glacier drive the same evening. Use Greymouth as the pause, then continue on the Greymouth to Franz Josef leg with fresh daylight and a full tank.

Nelson to Greymouth — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Nelson to Greymouth drive?
Yes, a 6-berth can do SH6 from Nelson to Greymouth. The road is sealed and used by buses and trucks. The trade-off is driver fatigue. The Buller Gorge and the coast south of Westport have bends, narrow shoulders, and limited passing space. Parking at Punakaiki is also easier in a shorter vehicle. If you have a choice, a compact 2-berth or 4-berth is less work on this leg.
Should we overnight at Westport or push through to Greymouth?
Push through only if you leave Nelson in the morning and still have good daylight for Punakaiki to Greymouth. Overnight at Westport if it is your first day driving on the left, you have children who need longer stops, or you are travelling in winter. Westport also makes sense after a late Picton arrival the day before. It turns a six-to-seven-hour travel day into two easy half-days.
Is fuel cheaper in Nelson, Westport, or Greymouth?
Prices move around, so do not build the day around chasing a small fuel difference. Nelson usually gives you the most choice before leaving. Westport is the sensible top-up point before the coast, and Greymouth has main-town fuel again at the end. The important rule is simple: do not arrive at Punakaiki low on fuel and assume there will be a normal service-station stop there.
