Rotorua to Napier motorhome drive on SH5

The Rotorua to Napier drive is about 220 km on SH5. Allow 3 hours 15 minutes of pure driving, or 4 to 4.5 hours with fuel, toilets, photos, and a proper stop at Waipunga Falls.
This is a good motorhome leg for a North Island trip. It links the Rotorua region with Hawke's Bay, and sits neatly inside the North Island in 10 days route or a longer North to South in 21 days plan. March is a strong month for Napier, with warm weather and harvest season traffic to be aware of.

The drive at a glance — distance, time, fuel
Use SH5 all the way from Rotorua to the Eskdale turn-off, then follow SH2 and local roads into Napier. The road is sealed throughout. It is mostly two-lane highway, with passing lanes on some of the longer climbs.
- Distance: about 220 km Rotorua to central Napier.
- Pure driving time: about 3 hours 15 minutes in a motorhome.
- Realistic travel time: 4 to 4.5 hours with two short stops and one viewpoint.
- Roads: SH5 Rotorua to Eskdale, then SH2 toward Napier.
- Best vehicle size: 2-berth or 4-berth is easiest. A 6-berth is fine, but slower on the hill sections east of Taupō.
Fuel before you leave Rotorua if the tank is below half. Z Energy, BP, Mobil, and Caltex are easy to find in Rotorua. Taupō has the last broad choice of fuel and supermarkets before the quieter SH5 section across the ranges. After that, expect limited services until Eskdale and Napier.
Three stops worth making in order
First stop: Wai-O-Tapu or Huka Falls. Wai-O-Tapu is close to SH5 south of Rotorua and suits travellers who have not yet seen geothermal country. Huka Falls is a short Taupō-side detour and is better if you want a free, fast stop with easy parking.
Second stop: Waipunga Falls Lookout. This is the one I would not skip. It is directly off SH5 between Taupō and Napier, with a proper pull-in and a big view over the falls. Watch your entry and exit in a larger motorhome, as traffic on SH5 can move quickly.
Third stop: Lake Tutira. Lake Tutira is not on the direct Rotorua to Napier line. From the SH5 and SH2 area near Eskdale, it means heading north on SH2 and then coming back toward Napier. Allow 45 to 60 minutes extra. Do it if you have daylight and want a quieter lake stop before the city. Skip it if you are running late.
The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.
The two recommended pace options
Same-day drive: leave Rotorua after breakfast, refuel, stop once near Taupō, stop at Waipunga Falls, and reach Napier mid-afternoon. This is the sensible plan for most motorhome travellers. It keeps you off SH5 at dusk, when glare, fatigue, and animals on rural roads become more annoying than scenic.
One night in the middle: overnight in Taupō if you want to add Huka Falls, the lakefront, or a supermarket reset. This works well after two busy Rotorua nights. It also gives you a shorter next day into Hawke's Bay, with time for Lake Tutira or an early check-in at a Napier holiday park.
If you are new to left-side driving, read the First time driving a motorhome guide before this leg. SH5 is not difficult, but the Rotorua to Taupō stretch has tourist traffic, geothermal side roads, and drivers changing speed without much warning.
When NOT to do this drive in one day
This is not an alpine pass like the Crown Range or Lindis Pass, and there is no major pass altitude to plan around. Still, SH5 crosses high inland country east of Taupō. In winter, especially June to August, fog, ice, heavy rain, and occasional snow can affect the Napier-Taupō Road. Closures happen after slips or severe weather.
Do not start late from Rotorua after a long international pickup day. New Zealand drives on the left, and a big vehicle needs more space on narrow shoulders. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months; if your licence is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit or approved translation.
If the forecast shows heavy rain or strong wind, check NZTA road updates before leaving. In a tall motorhome, the exposed sections near Te Haroto and Te Pohue can feel rougher than they look on a map.

What to do once you get to Napier
Napier is the easy landing point for Hawke's Bay. Aim to arrive with enough daylight to park, walk the Marine Parade waterfront, and work out the next morning without reversing a large camper in the dark.
For a powered site, look at Napier holiday parks or the wider Hastings and Bay View area, especially in February and March when events and harvest season can tighten availability. If your wider plan continues south, the Napier to Wellington drive is the natural next leg. If you are looping back inland, connect this page with the Rotorua region notes and the North Island in 10 days route.
For fuel planning beyond this leg, the Fuel economy and prices in NZ guide is useful. Motorhomes use more than visitors expect on rolling roads like SH5, especially into a headwind.
