The Wanaka to Makarora drive is a short but useful leg on SH6. It runs 65 km up the lakes to the Makarora Valley, taking about 1 hour 5 minutes of pure driving, or 2.5 to 3.5 hours if you stop properly.

This is the northern exit from the Wanaka region toward Haast Pass and the West Coast. It often sits inside a South Island in 10 days or South Island in 14 days route, especially in March when daylight is still good and the roads are quieter than January.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

From central Wanaka to Makarora, stay on SH6 the whole way. The road is sealed, two-lane, and generally straightforward, but it is not a motorway. Expect lake-edge bends, narrow bridges, cyclists in summer, and slow vehicles stopping for photos.

  • Distance: about 65 km.
  • Pure driving time: 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes.
  • Realistic time with stops: 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
  • Road: SH6 via Lake Hawea, The Neck, Lake Wanaka, and the Makarora River valley.
  • Pass: no alpine pass is crossed on this leg. Haast Pass is north of Makarora and tops out at 564 m.

A 2-berth or 4-berth camper is easy here. A 6-berth can do it, but use the larger pull-outs and avoid half-committing to small gravel viewpoints. If this is one of your first NZ driving days, remember New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for 12 months; if your licence is not in English, carry an IDP or approved translation.

Three stops worth making

1. Lake Hawea lookout. About 20 minutes from Wanaka, SH6 climbs above Lake Hawea. Use a proper signed pull-out, not the road shoulder. The lake can be windy, so open the habitation door carefully in a high-sided motorhome.

2. The Neck. This is the narrow strip between Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka, about 30 km from Wanaka. It is the best quick photo stop on the drive. Allow 10 to 15 minutes, more if traffic is heavy and you need to wait for a safe gap to rejoin SH6.

3. Blue Pools trailhead. The car park is north of Makarora, about 8 km beyond the township. If the DOC track is open, allow 60 to 90 minutes return. The swing bridge and track status have changed at times after storm damage and repair work, so check DOC before planning your whole day around it.

A quiet moment on the Wanaka to Makarora — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

The two recommended pace options

Same-day simple leg: leave Wanaka after breakfast, stop at Lake Hawea and The Neck, reach Makarora before lunch, then continue to Blue Pools if open. This works well if you are staying around Wanaka the night before and not rushing toward the West Coast.

Overnight in the middle of the mountains: stay at Makarora Tourist Centre or DOC Cameron Flat Campsite north of town. This makes sense if you want a slower start for Haast Pass the next morning, or if you are driving the Fox Glacier to Wanaka route in reverse and do not want to arrive in Wanaka tired.

For vehicle choice, pair this leg with our vehicle-size guide. For road confidence, read First time driving a motorhome before you collect the keys.

Fuel and food along the way

Fill in Wanaka. There are major fuel options in town, including Z Energy and BP, plus supermarkets if you need groceries before heading into the mountains. Makarora has limited services, and availability can be more variable than in a larger town.

Once you leave Wanaka, treat fuel as something to manage, not something to solve later. This is especially true if you are continuing over Haast Pass toward the West Coast, where distances feel short on the map but slow in bad weather.

Food is the same story. Wanaka has the better range. Makarora has basic meals and coffee options, but do not expect late-night choice. If you are travelling with kids, buy lunch before leaving Wanaka and use Makarora as a stretch stop rather than a rescue plan.

When not to do this drive in one day

The Wanaka to Makarora section alone is rarely the problem. The problem is adding too much after it. Do not leave Wanaka late in the afternoon and then push over Haast Pass to the glaciers in darkness, especially in winter.

In June, July, and August, SH6 can have ice, shaded wet corners, and occasional snow risk on the higher sections beyond Makarora. Chain controls are more common on alpine routes than on this exact lake section, but if signs require chains, you follow the sign. Check Waka Kotahi road updates before leaving.

If you are building a longer plan, connect this leg with the Wanaka region page, the West Coast region page, and the Best time of year for a NZ campervan trip guide. It is a small drive that decides the rhythm of a much bigger South Island day.

Wanaka to Makarora — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Wanaka to Makarora drive?
Yes. A 6-berth motorhome can drive Wanaka to Makarora on SH6 without needing a special route. The road is sealed and the gradients are manageable. The trade-off is parking and pull-outs. Some lake viewpoints are small, sloped, or busy in summer. Use marked pull-offs, avoid reversing near the road edge, and give yourself more time to get back into traffic safely.
Should we overnight in Makarora or push through to the West Coast?
Overnight in Makarora if you are leaving Wanaka late, travelling in winter, or wanting to walk Blue Pools if the DOC track is open. Push through only if you left early, have fuel, and are comfortable with a longer mountain driving day. Makarora to the West Coast adds Haast Pass, more bends, and fewer services, so it is not just another easy hour.
Is fuel cheaper in Wanaka than Makarora?
Usually Wanaka is the better place to fuel because it has more competition and larger service stations, including Z Energy and BP. Makarora is much smaller, with limited services and less certainty around hours or supply. Do not plan this leg around saving a few cents per litre. Fill in Wanaka, then treat Makarora as a coffee, toilet, and weather-check stop.
