The Wanaka to Mount Cook drive is about 205 km. Allow 2 hours 45 minutes of pure driving, or 4 to 5 hours with fuel, photos and a proper stop at Lake Pukaki. It is fully sealed on SH6, SH8 and SH80, with the high point at Lindis Pass, 965 m.
This leg sits neatly inside South Island in 10 days and South Island in 14 days itineraries. It also links Wanaka with the Mount Cook / Aoraki region, where March is often the calmest month for weather and daylight.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel
From central Wanaka, take SH6 north-east through Luggate to Tarras, then SH8 over Lindis Pass to Omarama and Twizel. From the southern end of Lake Pukaki, turn onto SH80 for the final run into Aoraki/Mount Cook Village.
- Distance: about 205 km to Mount Cook Village.
- Pure driving time: 2 hours 45 minutes in a normal motorhome.
- Realistic time: 4 to 5 hours with fuel, lunch and two photo stops.
- Roads: SH6, SH8 and SH80. All sealed.
- Highest point: Lindis Pass, 965 m.
Fuel before you leave Wanaka if you are below half a tank. There are BP and Caltex options in town. You can also top up at Allied in Omarama or Mobil in Twizel. Do not roll onto SH80 assuming there will be fuel at Mount Cook Village. There is no normal public fuel stop there.
The two recommended pace options
Same-day drive: This is the normal choice. Leave Wanaka by 9 am, stop at the Lindis Pass viewpoint, refuel or buy lunch in Twizel, then take your time along Lake Pukaki. You can still reach White Horse Hill DOC campsite or Glentanner Holiday Park in daylight.
Overnight in the middle: Use Twizel or Lake Pukaki if you are starting late, travelling with children, or coming from the West Coast the same morning. Twizel Holiday Park gives you power, laundry and groceries. Lake Pukaki has big views, but check current camping rules before relying on any lakeside overnight spot.
A 2-berth or 4-berth is the easiest size for this road. A 6-berth can do it, but it will feel slower on the Lindis bends and at the narrow pull-offs on SH80. If this is your first day in New Zealand, read the First time driving a motorhome guide first. New Zealand drives on the left, and that matters most when you are tired or pulling back onto the highway after photos.
The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.
Three stops worth making in order
1. Lindis Pass lookout. This is the proper stop between Tarras and Omarama. The car park is on the pass, with a short uphill track to the view. In winter, keep the stop short if the surface is icy and do not block the turning area with a long motorhome.
2. Omarama or Twizel for food and fuel. Omarama is simple and quick. Twizel has more choice, including a supermarket, cafes and Mobil fuel. This is also the place to decide whether the weather is good enough to continue up SH80.
3. Lake Pukaki and Peter's Lookout. The lake section is the reason not to rush this drive. The colour changes with light and cloud, and Aoraki/Mount Cook appears straight ahead when the weather opens. Peter's Lookout is the classic stop on SH80. Use marked pull-outs only. The road is scenic, but it still carries buses, cars and rental vehicles.
The Omarama Clay Cliffs are a worthwhile extra if you have time. Allow about 45 to 60 minutes for the detour. The access road includes unsealed sections, so skip it after heavy rain or if your rental agreement restricts gravel-road driving.
When not to do this drive in one day
Do not force Wanaka to Mount Cook late in the day in winter. Lindis Pass reaches 965 m and can see snow, ice and chain advisories from June to August, sometimes into September. The road can close after heavy snow or crashes. Check Waka Kotahi road updates before leaving Wanaka.
Also pause in Twizel if the forecast for Mount Cook is poor. SH80 is sealed and not high by alpine standards, but it is exposed beside Lake Pukaki and can be unpleasant in strong wind, heavy rain or low cloud. If the village forecast is bad and you have a flexible night, staying in Twizel can save a stressful final hour.
This leg pairs well with the Queenstown to Mount Cook drive guide if you are comparing approaches from the south. For a longer plan, use it inside South Island in 10 days, then read the Mount Cook / Aoraki region page for walks, campsites and weather trade-offs.
2-hr SH8 north via Lindis Pass and Twizel.
What to do once you get to Mount Cook
White Horse Hill DOC campsite is the classic motorhome base for the Hooker Valley Track, but it is exposed and popular. Arrive with water, food and a charged phone. There are no supermarket-style services in the village.
If you want powered sites, showers and a less raw weather experience, look at Glentanner Holiday Park on SH80, about 18 km before the village. It is a practical choice for larger motorhomes and for travellers who want an easier departure the next morning toward Lake Tekapo or Christchurch.
If the weather is clear, walk at least part of the Hooker Valley Track before sunset or early the next morning. If cloud is sitting low, the Tasman Glacier viewpoint is shorter and often more forgiving.
