Wanaka to Queenstown looks like a one-hour hop on the map. In a motorhome, it is better treated as a short alpine drive, especially if you take the Crown Range Road over New Zealand’s highest sealed public road.
The direct route is sealed, scenic, and steep in places. A 2-berth or 4-berth is comfortable. A 6-berth can do it, but the SH6 route via Cromwell is calmer if you are new to left-side driving.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel
The Crown Range route from Wanaka to Queenstown is about 68 km. Allow 1 hour 10 minutes pure driving, or 2 to 2.5 hours with Cardrona, the summit lookout, and Arrowtown. You leave Wanaka on Cardrona Valley Road, climb Crown Range Road to 1,121 m, then join SH6 near Arrow Junction and Frankton.
The easier motorhome route is SH6 via Cromwell. That is about 112 km, usually 1 hour 40 minutes pure driving, or 2.5 to 3 hours with a stop in Cromwell or the Kawarau Gorge. It avoids the steepest bends of the Crown Range.
Fuel before leaving Wanaka if your tank is below half. Z Energy Wanaka and Caltex Wanaka are straightforward stops. On the Cromwell route, BP and Allied in Cromwell are useful before the Kawarau Gorge. There is also Z Frankton before Queenstown.
Which road should a motorhome take
Take the Crown Range in clear weather if you are rested, confident, and in a smaller or medium motorhome. The road is fully sealed. The issue is not the surface. It is the gradient, tight bends, slow traffic, and winter ice risk near the top.
Take SH6 via Cromwell if you have a long 6-berth, nervous passengers, poor weather, or a late start. It is less dramatic but easier to drive. The extra 44 km is often worth it for first-timers.
This leg sits neatly inside South Island in 10 days, South Island in 14 days, and the Queenstown + Fiordland loop. March is the easiest matching when-to-go month for settled light, fewer ice issues, and less pressure than January. Check the vehicle-size guide before choosing a large motorhome for this part of the Queenstown region.
The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.
Three stops worth making
- Cardrona village: 25 km from Wanaka. Good for a coffee, toilets, and the old hotel frontage. Park carefully, as the roadside fills quickly in ski season.
- Crown Range summit lookout: about 35 km from Wanaka. This is the high point at 1,121 m. Use the marked parking area only. Wind can be strong, so open motorhome doors with care.
- Arrowtown: detour from SH6 before Frankton. Allow 45 to 75 minutes if you want a proper walk. It is much more pleasant than trying to kill time in Queenstown traffic with a large vehicle.

The two recommended pace options
Same-day scenic drive: leave Wanaka after breakfast, stop at Cardrona and the summit, have lunch in Arrowtown, then reach Queenstown or Frankton mid-afternoon. This avoids the worst of the evening traffic around Frankton Road.
Slow overnight approach: stay another night in Wanaka or stop around Arrowtown if you want a shorter driving day before Milford Sound or the Southern Scenic Route. There is no need to overnight halfway for distance alone. Do it for weather, fatigue, or because Queenstown parking is easier when you arrive in daylight.
Minimum hire age varies by operator and vehicle class, commonly 18 to 25. If a younger driver is sharing this leg, confirm that before planning a winter Crown Range crossing.
1-hr scenic drive over the Crown Range (or 1.5 hr via Cromwell).
When not to take the Crown Range
Avoid the Crown Range after fresh snow, during black-ice warnings, in strong crosswinds, or if road signs say chains are required and you do not have chains fitted correctly. The road does close during snow and ice events. Usually it is for hours, not days, but it can still break a tight Queenstown pickup or activity plan.
In winter, check NZTA road status before leaving Wanaka. Some rental agreements also limit snow-chain use or alpine-road travel, so read the vehicle notes rather than assuming.
Once in Queenstown, go straight to your campground or parking plan. Freedom camping is tightly controlled around Queenstown. Creeksyde Queenstown and Queenstown Top 10 at Arthurs Point are common motorhome bases. Use the Queenstown region page for where to stay, dump stations, and what is realistic without moving the vehicle every hour.
